LEGISLATIVE WRAP-UP

It has been a successful year in the legislature this year.  Much of the success is due to our gains in the last election cycle. Union members supported the endorsed candidates, giving our friends who already were in the legislature more support. We need to get out and support the endorsed candidates in this election cycle.

Some of our successes are listed below:

  1.  Defeated the nomination of Sam Jensen to the Commission of Industrial Relations.

  2. Stopped LB 884 the governors "Wellness" bill.

  3. Created interim study on 24 hour facilities.

  4. Creation of a Legislative Panel to investigate the problems at the Beatrice State Developmental Center. The panel shall have the power to subpoena and swear in witnesses This is only the 4th or 5th time in the last 30 years a panel has had this power.

I wish to thank all of you who took the time to contact your senators on our issues, it really made a difference.

If anyone is interested in becoming part of our Government Affairs Committee, or getting updates from the committee, please let the office know. The more people we have participating, the more effective we can be.

We will lose many great longtime friends in the legislature due to term limits; We owe a great deal to the following Senators who supported working people:

District 11 Ernie Chambers

District 25 Diana Schimek

District  5   Don Preister

District 15 Ray Janssen

District 39 Dwite Pedersen

District  7 John Synowiecki

District 13 Lowen Kruse
